O nome TolKiEm é uma referência deliberada a J.R.R. Tolkien — o escritor que criou um mundo habitado por povos radicalmente diferentes: Elfos, Anões, Hobbits, Homens. Povos com histórias de desconfiança, conflito e orgulho antigo. E ainda assim, quando o momento exigiu, aprenderam a coexistir. A confiar. A lutar lado a lado pelo que era comum a todos.
The name TolKiEm is a deliberate reference to J.R.R. Tolkien — the writer who created a world inhabited by radically different peoples: Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Men. Peoples with histories of mistrust, conflict and ancient pride. And yet, when the moment demanded it, they learned to coexist. To trust. To fight side by side for what was common to all.

O TolKiEm é um projecto sem fins lucrativos. Não existem anúncios, não existe rastreamento, não existe monetização dos dados de quem pesquisa. O motor de busca é construído sobre o SearXNG — uma plataforma open source que agrega resultados de múltiplas fontes sem identificar os utilizadores.
TolKiEm is a non-profit project. There are no ads, no tracking, no monetisation of search data. The search engine is built on SearXNG — an open source platform that aggregates results from multiple sources without identifying users.

Às vezes o TolKiEm não encontra resultados positivos para uma pesquisa. Essa ausência não é um erro — é um espelho.
Sometimes TolKiEm finds no positive results for a search. That absence is not an error — it is a mirror.
Reflecte o estado actual do espaço mediático: os algoritmos dominantes foram construídos para maximizar o engagement, e o engagement alimenta-se do conflito, do medo e da indignação. O que chega ao topo dos motores de busca é, em grande medida, o que nos mantém presos ao homo malignus que existe dentro de cada um de nós.
It reflects the current state of the media landscape: dominant algorithms were built to maximise engagement, and engagement feeds on conflict, fear and outrage. What rises to the top of search engines is, in large part, what keeps us bound to the homo malignus that exists within each of us.
